NEW DELHI: The total number of coronavirus cases in India crossed the 56,000-mark on Friday i.e. 8 May 2020 with the countrywide death toll at 1,886. Maharashtra, the state with the most cases is now at 17,974, as per the Union Health Ministry data by 8 am.
In the last 24 hours, as much as 3,392 cases got reported. As per the figures of different states and union territories, around 4,500 new cases also got reported this week in between Wednesday, May 6 and Thursday, May 7.

According to the information given by the officials, 2 BSF (Border Security Force) personnel and 1 CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) constable, aged 55 stationed at the Mumbai International Airport lost their lives due to the highly contagious virus. There are currently 195 individuals from BSF who also have been affected by the virus. They also reported 41 fresh cases yesterday.
Maharashtra and Gujarat are the two states which have been most affected by the virus. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu will soon be hitting the 5,500-mark in terms of affected people in the state, almost 600 new cases were reported in the region yesterday. It has a total death toll of 37.
During a virtual event, on the occasion of Buddha Purnima, Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India expressed that the nation is doing it's best to cure and save every citizen from COVID-19, as well as taking the global level obligations on a very serious note during the pandemic.

The nation is currently on the third phase of the lockdown. It was on March 25, the lockdown got announced for the duration of 21 days and got extended for 14 days till May 3. It has now been increased for 14 more days but also has relaxations till 17 May.
