Even as the 21-day lockdown is nearing its end, coronavirus cases in the country continue to surge at an alarming rate. The lockdown which was announced on March 25, was imposed in a bid to contain the spread of the novel virus. As of Monday, the total number of COVID-19 cases in India has reached 9,152. According to the Ministry of Health, out of the total cases, 856 patients have recovered, discharged or migrated. The death toll now stands at 308.
Last week, the prime minister had a video conference meeting with chief ministers where the latter urged him to extend the lockdown by at least two weeks.
While PM Modi is yet to announce his final word on lockdown extension, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has already hinted on the extension. The Delhi CM took to his official Twitter handle and said: “PM has taken correct decision to extend lockdown. Today, India’s position is better than many developed countries because we started lockdown early. If it is stopped now, all gains would be lost. To consolidate, it is imp to extend it."
